I lost the key to the car I rented. Fine. That's my fault. I told her that, then she said crap like:
"oh you're gonna have to find that key"
"oh I don't know how much it's gonna cost but you'll be charged for the replacement. It's not cheap"
"oh you should have held on to the key"
"oh you shouldn't have lost the key"
"oh you should know you need to keep that kind of things safe"
..yeah sure, I must look like someone who'd intentionally let go of the key as well as doesn't know these things should be kept safe.

The guy had obviously lost the key! You don't need to keep repeating it and making him feel bad, just give him the spare and tell him to get it copied.
